Your First Court Date in Michigan: What Actually Happens

Attorney Advertising.

For most people, walking into a courtroom for the first time is terrifying, mostly because they have no idea what is about to happen. A lot of that fear comes from not knowing the process. So let me walk you through it in plain language.

The arraignment

Your first appearance in a criminal case is usually the arraignment. This is where the court formally tells you what you are charged with, advises you of your rights, and addresses bond and release conditions, which determine whether and how you can stay out of custody while your case is pending. It is generally not the day you argue your innocence or tell your side of the story.

Bond and conditions

The court may set a bond and conditions you have to follow, like not leaving the state or not contacting certain people. Having a lawyer at this stage can matter, because the conditions set early can affect your life for months.

What comes after

After the arraignment, a case moves through stages like pretrial conferences, where your lawyer and the prosecutor discuss the evidence and possible resolutions, and, for felonies, additional steps before any trial. Most cases are resolved somewhere in this process, not at a dramatic trial.

Do not walk in alone

The single most important thing you can do is have a lawyer with you early, before you make decisions you cannot take back. If you have a court date coming up, let’s talk before you go.

Do not face it alone. Call me at (248) 270-5979 or discuss your criminal-defense matter online, and let’s talk about your situation.
