I am Nicholas “Nick” Somberg, the founder of Somberg Law, PLLC, a passionate trial attorney, entrepreneur and advocate for individual liberty. Known as “The Champion of Liberty” and @TheLibertyLawyer on social media, I have dedicated my legal career to fighting for ordinary people against powerful institutions, including the government, prosecutors, police agencies and insurance companies.
I have practiced law since 2016 and have operated my own law practice throughout my career. I am admitted to practice in Michigan and federal court. As a criminal-defense and personal-injury attorney, I represent people during some of the most frightening and difficult moments of their lives. I believe every client deserves an attorney who will listen, prepare thoroughly and fight without backing down.
Criminal defense and personal injury
My criminal-defense practice is built around protecting freedom, constitutional rights and the presumption of innocence. I am a trial attorney at heart. I am not afraid to challenge the government, expose weaknesses in its evidence or take a case before a jury when that is what justice requires. My clients come from every political background, culture and walk of life. I do not judge people based on their beliefs, their past or the accusations made against them. I focus on their story, their rights and what must be done to protect their future.
I also represent people injured because of another person’s negligence. Insurance companies have teams of adjusters and lawyers working to reduce what injured people receive. I work to level that playing field, hold responsible parties accountable and pursue the maximum compensation available under the law. For me, personal-injury representation is not simply about processing a claim. It is about helping someone rebuild after an event that may have changed every part of their life.
Second chances through expungement
I am also the owner of MichiganExpungementLaw.com, a practice dedicated to helping people clear eligible criminal records and move forward with their lives. I have helped hundreds of people clear their criminal histories, opening doors to better employment, housing, education and opportunities that had previously been closed to them. I believe people who have completed their sentences should not be forced to carry the same punishment for the rest of their lives.
Public advocacy and individual liberty
In 2024, I became the Republican nominee for the United States House of Representatives in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District. Although I ran as a Republican, my legal practice and advocacy have never been limited by party affiliation. I help conservatives, liberals, libertarians, independents and people who have no interest in politics. Liberty and equal justice belong to everyone.
My advocacy extends beyond the courtroom. Through a substantial following on Facebook and other social-media platforms, I educate people about their rights, discuss criminal justice and government accountability, and give a voice to people who feel ignored by the system. I also host The Liberty Lawyer Podcast, where I speak with attorneys, advocates and people whose experiences expose injustice, wrongful accusations and government overreach.
I was honored to receive the Defender of Liberty Award from the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The award recognized my defense of constitutional rights, my work challenging government overreach and my broader commitment to the cause of individual liberty. Although awards are appreciated, the results that matter most to me are the lives protected, the criminal histories cleared, the freedoms preserved and the clients who know someone stood beside them when the system was against them.
Entrepreneurship and historic restoration in Pontiac
Outside the courtroom, I am a lifelong entrepreneur, small-business owner and real-estate investor. For approximately 15 years, I have purchased and restored historic homes while working to preserve neighborhoods and help rebuild Pontiac. Restoring these properties is about more than real estate. It is about saving Michigan history, returning neglected buildings to productive use and investing personally in the future of a city that deserves another great chapter.
Whether I am defending someone accused of a crime, standing up to an insurance company, clearing an old criminal record or restoring a historic property, my mission remains the same: fight for the little guy, defend liberty and leave my community better than I found it.

Nick was the plaintiff in Somberg v. McDonald, No. 23-1872 (6th Cir. 2024), a First Amendment case arising from his defense work during a virtual court hearing.
